So you are creating a website, or about to create one?

To have your site found by people who are looking for the information you provide, you need to ensure that the search engines which index your site, are getting the right information to index on.

So that the right “message” is being sent to the engines, is based on what keywords they find in:

The content of your site.

The title of your website (within the title tag).

The words or phrases in your site’s URL.

Well written “natural” content is the best way to include keywords in your content, and those other places mentioned, but just what keywords should you use to include there?

Fortunately, most of the tools that can give a good guide to what keywords will be most effective, in terms of both searches per month and the number of results returned, are freely available.

Google Suggest: this is the small window which drops down in the search bar when you type in a search. Start with the phrase you really want, then look down as you type to see other suggestions, and the amount of results returned. Basically these results are your competition .

Google Trends: Show the trends in searches over time. This will let you know if the keyword is maintaining popularity.

Google AdWords Tool. Handy to show searches for many related keywords.

Your own Brain!..yes selecting keywords has a certain amount of skill associated with it, but the most important thing to do is put yourself in the shoes of someone who might be searching for your formation, and imagine what they would search for.

All too much? I found all the help I needed, including advice on choosing keywords, and much more, by joining a membership site about creating your first website

I recently met with a business owner that sells manufactured homes (better known as mobile homes). The company is established and has decent branding, but lacks a Web site (thus the reason I was there). Preliminary meetings with our prospective clients normally involve quite a bit of investigation into the business, their primary target audience, and brainstorming about potential keywords. During the meeting I learned about his industry, clients, and the challenges his business encounters. He explained very clearly that they despise the term “Mobile Home” and preferred the terms “Manufactured Housing” or “Modular Homes.” I am a Real Estate Broker and have seen this marketing shift in the last several years and was not surprised.

After the meeting was over and I got back to the office to begin the research, it quickly became obvious that the business owner was not going to like what I was going to tell him. The term “mobile home” was searched approximately 5x’s more than “modular home.” If he wants to build an effective Web site for his company, he would need to optimize for the term “mobile home” – the term he despises.

This story is a prime example of what keyword research is all about. SEO is not just about making the site rank high in the search engines, it’s about doing market research and then targeting the desired traffic. Please don’t misunderstand, just because one keyword has more traffic than another, it doesn’t mean it is better for your business to optimize for that keyword. For example: As a Real Estate Broker would it be smarter to optimize for “homes for sale” (A) or “Real Estate Agent” (B)? Even though (A) may have 10x’s the amount of traffic; an individual that searches for (B) is likely a better target market. Some people can browse for homes for years without actually buying, while someone searching for the services of a Real Estate Agent is more likely to convert.

Keyword research and analysis is the basic foundation of SEO work. It can mean the difference of success or failure for your online marketing strategy. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in campaigns that actually increased specific keyword traffic via integration of Offline and Online marketing techniques. In most cases though, the human user is the driving factor which determines the direction of your SEO efforts and Web design.

You need keywords which are frequently used by web users, yet not in high demand among your competitors. In order to find these keywords, there are many keyword research tools out thee which you can use.

Wordtracker is by far one of the best tools that is available for you when it comes to searching the relevant keywords that you need for your search engine optimization purposes of your website or blogs. Unfortunately this tool comes with a hefty annual or monthly subscription fee. Wordtracker also comes with a free trial tool and you will also have the option to pay a given sum to access the tool for certain duration. Other than Wordtracker, there are other tools including Google AdWords tool and Guidebeam.

Overture’s keyword tool which used to be free and a bit more faster than Wordtracker; in terms of functionality, it was similar to Wordtracker but will not let you know how many other websites are targeting that keyword or key phrase. The tool though was discontinued; the alternative now is Google keyword tool. If you feed in one word, this tool will give you all of the relevant combinations using this word along with the number of searches performed for them. If you entered something which is not being used very much, no results will come up; this tells you that few, if any searches have been done for that word or phrase.

Google Keyword Tool gives you potential keywords for use in your SEO and marketing efforts and gives you the Google statistics on these terms, along with their search engine usage (and trends in the frequency of searches for these terms). Other features of Google Keyword Tool include:

Sorting the results for your chosen keyword by popularity, history in the AdWords program, cost and predicted position.

Simple keyword manipulation, you can select keywords individually or add a large number at once.

Searching for keywords in any URL you specify. The tool can also search on pages linked to or from that URL.

The database of statistics is regularly updated, so that new keywords and key phrases are available as they come up.

Guidebeam guidebeam dotcom is another good keyword tool. Search for a keyword or key phrase and it will also suggest related searches. The statistics it gives for each keyword or phrase is weighted by relevance.

All of these keyword tools can be a great help to those who need to perform keyword research for the purposes of SEO for their own website.

Keyword research is the lifeblood of a search engine marketing campaign – either natural or paid search. If you don’t promote your site with the right keywords, you will waste a lot of time and money for nothing. The obvious place to start your keyword research for a pay per click campaign is the search engine’s own keyword tool. But you can go far beyond that to uncover keywords that are very effective for your business. Following are eight strategies for creating keyword lists.

1. Comb your web site for keywords. Every different way you have described your business on your site is a new keyword or set of keywords.

2. Think from your customer’s perspective. Are the words you use to describe your business really the way other people would describe it? Ask around. Whatever words people are using to search for your kind of business are the words you need to target, regardless of what terms are used in your industry. Don’t get so wrapped up in industry jargon that you end up paying for ineffective keywords.

3. Nichebot. We really like this web site. First sign up for an account. It’s free to sign up. Then type a starting keyword related to your service or product in the text box at the top of the page and hit the Search button. You can change the middle dropdown list to “Overture” to get a better idea of the actual keywords people are using to search in Yahoo!. But don’t overlook the “Word Tracker” option, which will generate a lot of keyword data.

The data will be returned with information such as the number of searches performed for each keyword, the amount of competition, and the KEI for each keyword (”KEI”, which stands for “Keyword Effectiveness Index”, is a value for the keyword based on a formula that considers the number of searches for the keyword relative to the number of directly competing web pages).

4. You can also look through your web logs for the search terms people have used on your web site or to find your web site. This is critical data that few businesses tap into. If people are already using particular keywords to find your site, then those keywords likely warrant extra promotion.

5. If you sell products, you can combine brands with attributes of the products (color, width, size, etc.) to create many specific, late buying cycle keywords. For instance, if someone is searching for “laptop computers” they are likely in an early stage of doing research in the process of purchasing a laptop computer. But if a person is searching or “HP Pavilion 15 inch laptop”, that indicates that he is further along in the buying process because he is researching a specific brand and screen size of laptop.

6. Competitors’ brand names. Most search engines’ official position on bidding on your competitors’ trademarks is that you can only do it if you are the owner of the trademark, a reseller of the company’s goods, or if you provide “substantive” information about the company. I suggest you bid on keywords that contain the brand, but don’t use the brand name in your ads.

For instance, if you were marketing a line of tennis shoes, you might want to create one generic keyword group that contained brands names such as “Nike”, “Reebok” and “Adidas”, and then write an ad targeting purchasers of tennis shoes in a general way, without referencing any of the competition. Some of the brand name keywords may get declined, but probably not all of them.

7. Try to think of keywords that reflect different stages of the searcher’s buying cycle. Early in the buying cycle, they will be looking for more general information about your type of service or products. Later in the buying cycle, when they are much closer to making a decision and doing business, they will use more specific keywords, which might include particular brands and models, or even locations to make a purchase. Try to use keywords that cover the entire buying cycle. It may be worth bidding higher for the more specific keywords because your conversion rate for those keywords should be higher.

8. Spy on your competitors. There are a couple of online services, such as SpyFu and KeywordSpy, that allow you to see what keywords your competitors are bidding on in their paid search campaigns. This information can be very useful. But don’t just assume that your competitors are smarter than you are. You will still need to test to see which of their keywords are effective.

And remember that you are looking for groups of keywords. Unless your campaign is very small, it is unlikely you will want to run a 1:1 ratio of keywords to ads. It will be a very unruly number of ads to have to create and monitor. So you will be assigning ads to small groups of related keywords, and writing ad copy that applies to all of the keywords. So if you’re going to run ads for “gardening”, you might as well run them for “flower gardening”, “spring garden”, and “planting”. The major search engines have some nice dynamic features that make it pretty easy to customize an ad for multiple keywords.

Using the above strategies, you should be able to greatly expand the number of keywords in your paid search campaigns, and generate many new keyword ideas for natural search. I recommend that you first use your paid search campaign to generate data related to your keywords, and then optimize your site for those keywords that convert at the highest rate, unless the keywords are too competitive to target with SEO.

WHY?
Hi everybody!

Thank you for your answers,

Question: I have reviewed some keyword research tools, and saw a great difference between them. For example Wordtracker gives for "interesting facts" – 44077 daily searches, while Trellian's Keyword Discovery tool says that it is 114. How it can be?

We all know that no keyword research tool has accurate numbers, but why they have so big differences?

Thanks,
Vusal

In order to be succesful, websites need to get a significant volume of traffic of good quality. Search engines are the major way that people get to websites today.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of doing activities that will cause the search engines to favor your site and make it prominent. The favored sites will appear among the first results when keywords that relate to them are searched for.

SEO software types

1. Niche Finders

The scope of topics that can be used to develop a website is as wide as the capacity of the human mind. Anything you can think of or imagine can be the topic of a website. However, if you want to develop a site that will make money or provide you a loudspeaker to express your views, you need to choose a subject area that has a high probability of success which can draw an audience.

In order to be succesful, you generally don’t want to pick a topic that is too large. If your Site Concept is too general, the competition will be fierce. Additionally, powerful companies with large, highly trained staffs will be competing against you to get attention. For example, it would be very difficult to win in the topic of health. All the major hospitals, health providers and health information resources would be competing against you.

You need to select a topic that has a significant level of interest, has low competition and has high profit potential. Even in the health area, a topic like natural cures for ingrown toenails might fit the bill. Those people who are interested in this topic will be highly targeted. If you provide them with useful content, they will become your fans and likely candidates to listen to you and to purchase items that you suggest.

A niche is a subset of a topic that has limited competition and has enough depth to allow for discussion of a few high demand topics.

Software to find a niche automates the process of finding profitable niches.

Myleena Phan, the creator of Niche Inspector, has an excellent description of the manual steps that she used to do prior to creating Niche Inspector. It is available on the web.

Niche finder software programs

   1. Nichebot

   2. Micro Niche Finder

   3. Niche Inspector

2. Keyword software

Wikipedia says “The term keyword in reference to SEO usually refers to a word or phrase (combination of words, such as ‘Chicago Courier Service’) used to find relevant and useful web pages.”

Once a website creator has found a suitable niche, they need to find keywords related to the niche which are popular and profitable. Keyword software provides this capability. The keyword programs provide some or all of the following;

    * ad cost per click

    * traffic volume to expect depending on amount paid

    * search volume

    * competition intelligence

Keyword Programs

   1. Keyword Elite

   2. Keyword Spy

   3. Wordtracker

   4. SEOBook Tools

4. Tools to produce backlinks

The search engines value sites that have many links pointing to them. If the link comes from an high page rank source, it’s even more valuable. Link building is the most important thing to do in order to rank in the search engines.

The following list describes a number of strategies for increasing backlinks. Many of these approaches are enhanced by software that automates or speeds the process.

A large part of the process for getting links is submitting stuff to websites that publish content that includes a link to your site. The submission process generally consists of selecting a group of target sites, registering, preparing multiple versions of your own site information or an article or other information , submitting the information and then tracking the results. The submission programs provide some or all of these features but generally must be used in a semi automated fashion since there is almost always something that you have to do manually while you’re at the site.

Link generation methods and related software

1) Submit to Directories

There are directory submission services and there are programs which automate the process of submitting to a directory.

Directory submission software

# Fast directory submitter

# Digixmas

# Submiteaze

# Directory Submitter

2) Write and Submit Articles to Article Sites

Writing articles for well respected article sites is one of the most effective techniques for getting links to your website. Ezinearticles, for one, is a highly ranked and well respected article site. When you submit your article to them, they give it a thorough review. If your article is chosen for publication that indicates it has been approved by the best and that’s the way that the search engines as well as many surfers view it.

Josh Spaulding has written a very enlightening eBook call Article Marketing Domination that clearly spells out how to take advantage of this method of generating links.

Going from article site to site manually entering article and author information is highly labor intensive. To do this effectively, you need an automated article submission program.

Article Submission Programs

   1. Article Post Robot

   2. Instant Article Submitter

   3. ArticleAnnouncer

3) Post Comments in Blogs and Forums Related to Your Niche

Blog Finding Software

You want software to find blogs that are dofollow which means that if they link to you, it counts as a link. Blog finding software finds blogs in the topic that you are interested in and can check for dofollow status. They should also allow for a date of last comment setting because a dormant blog is useless.

   1. Fast Blog Finder

   2. Real Link Finder

4) Social Bookmarking

Wikipedia says that “social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata”. The social bookmarking sites such as Digg, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, furl and others allow users to nominate articles that they believe are the best on the net and should be publicized. Articles or posts that get a high ranking gain many links and tons of traffic.

Social Bookmarking Software

Automarker – Jonathan Leger, one of the net’s leading internet marketers, has developed this program. This allows groups of people to collaborate on voting for each others quality content. A subscriber receives a list of articles to review for promotion and can in turn submit articles for review.

5) Videos

Videos are a new hot way to gain links. There are multiple sites to submit videos to and a program to automate submissions to them is a great aid.

Video submission software

   1. VideoWildfire

   2. Video Post Robot

4. Website traffic reports

Once a website has been developed, it is important to review the traffic to see where visitors are coming from and how they are getting to you. There are powerful free tools that provide this information and there are a number of companies that offer sophisticated services with all sorts of detailed analysis to maximize one’s website effectiveness.

These reports provide statistics about the number of visitors, pages visited, time on the site, new vs old visitors, source of the visitors, country of origin and more.

Google provides a powerful tool for free to analyze your website’s performance. It is called Google Analytics. You go to http://www.google.com/analytics and register. You need to put some html on every page to allow the statistics to be captured.

Firestats by Omry Dayan is powerful and elegant tool to track your web traffic and statistics. It is particularly well suited for Wordpress blogs but may be used on other websites.

Summary

There are many programs and tools that can cause your traffic and profits to skyrocket. Take advantage of the programs listed here to get the best the web has to offer.

So you have developed your idea for a niche website and you’re raring to go, but before you go ahead and start writing content there is another vital step you should take. It seems so obvious and yet many people make the error of failing to take it. What is this critical next move? Keyword research.

The importance of keyword research

The effective use of keyword research can mean the difference between a website that climbs the search engine listings, has thousands of visitors each day and generates an excellent revenue and a website that goes unnoticed. Using niche keywords can improve your sales and boost your profits. Keywords or keyword phrases are the terms that a searcher types into a search engine to find whatever they’re looking for on the internet. Keyword research is the process of selecting the most appropriate keywords on order to optimize your search engine rankings and help lead visitors to your site.

How to research keywords

You don’t have to be a marketing expert to do your own keyword expert; there are already tools out there to help you. Two good examples are Instant Keyword Research and Keyword Elite. Both are simple tool to use and will save you a lot of time and leg work. The advantages of such a tool are obvious:

You can find more specifically targeted keywords

You can improve your search engine ranking

You can save time

You can increase your profits

You can generate large keyword lists

You can uncover negative keywords to avoid

Keyword analysis

Another advantage of using a keyword research tool is that it will give you an estimate on daily clicks per keyword and pay-per-click bid values. Why is this important? If you want to optimize your profits you need a heads up on the competition. These figures will allow you to analyze how many pages are competing for the top rankings and to focus your keywords.

How to use your keywords

Once you have completed your research and generated a list of targeted keywords you need to know where to place them on your website. Strategic placement will greatly improve your search engine ranking. It’s important not to fall into the trap of overusing them otherwise the search engines may interpret them as spam.

Optimal use of keywords is 3-7 times on each page

The title tag should contain your most important keywords, usually 5-6

Headings tags should contain your most important keywords or keyword phrases

Use keywords in hypertext links

Keyword content should be placed in the upper third portion of the text

Most Internet marketing experts will tell you that keyword research and proper usage means more to your website’s success than almost any other aspect. So take your time, do the research and create your content the right way.

Keyword research should be a cornerstone of your online business. Unfortunately many online business people have no idea what keyword research is, how to do it, and how to use it to their advantage. Once you figure out what good keyword research is, you will easily see its importance in your marketing strategy.

The first step in keyword research is to understand how keywords work. When someone comes online looking for information they usually go to a search engine and enter a word or phrase related to what they are looking for. Once entered, this query will produce a list of sites related to the word or phrase they have entered.

Generally the first listing will get about 40% of the people who do the search to click on it. The goal of keyword research is to have your site come up number one in the search engine for words related to your site that people are actually using to search for information.

Finding Relevant Keywords

When choosing keywords you want to make sure you are finding words that are related and relevant to your content. If you keywords have nothing to do with your site you will never rank in the search engines. For example, if your site is about dogs you do not want to go after keywords like credit card, or internet marketing. They are both very profitable keywords, but have no relevance to your site. You want to find keywords that are directly relevant to the content on your pages.

To come up with good keyword ideas think about what you want your site to be known for. Are you the best place to find organic dog food? If so, you may want to do some research around the term dog food, and organic dog food. You also can think about what your site offers. If you offer information about a certain kind of jewelry or bracelet, you would want to do some research to find good keywords related to jewelry and more specifically the type of bracelet you offer. Try to find keywords as closely related to what your site offers. If you find those they will be more likely to convert to sales.

What makes a good keyword.

Internet marketers throw around the term good keywords all the time. It can be very frustrating for a new online business person, who just doesn’t really know what that means. A good keyword is a word or phrase that is relevant to your site, that actually has people looking for it, and is not too competitive so you can actually rank for it in the search engines.

How do you know people are searching?

This is where many people fall down in keyword research. They come up with relevant terms to use for keywords but fail to see if anyone else is actually looking for that specific term. You want to make sure any keywords you choose have people searching for that exact term. You can use a number of tools to get this information. You can use wordtracker, and now even Google’s Adwords Keyword Tool will show you search volume. Using Google’s tool is smart because it’s information straight from the largest search engine there is. You may ask, how many searches do I need? This is a good question and will certainly depend on your site, but you should definitely look for keywords with at least 50 “hits” a day.

How do I choose appropriately competitive keywords?

People used to just enter their keywords in Google and see how many competing pages there were. This is not a very effective way to check for competition. Anyone can put up a website, and when you just enter your keyword you are getting results from every site that mentions any and all of the words in your kewyord. You can start by entering your keyword in Google with quotes around it. This will give you the results for all the sites that have that exact phrase on their site. Even better just enter your keyword and check out the first page of sites. What kind of page rank do they have? How many links do they have coming to the site? These are the things you are going to be competing against them for, so it’s wise to make sure you can beat the top sites.

As you can see keyword research can be a little intimidating, just because there’s so much to it. However, once you get the basics of keyword research you can easily find profitable keywords for your site. Once ranked for profitable keywords your site will be getting targeted free traffic, which is what every online marketer wants.

No matter what business you are in being able to find profitable keywords and do good keyword research will improve your business. Whether you are trying to increase your subscribers, get more readers, find leads for a network marketing business, sell products, make money with affiliate marketing, it can all be done better with the use of profitable keywords.

Why do I need keywords?

Since the advent of web 2.0, and social marketing so many people now think you don’t really need good keywords. They are now learning and focusing on how to drive social traffic to their sites. The problem with social traffic is just that, it’s social traffic. People are looking to interact, or are just stumbling by as they look through sites. It is hard to get social traffic to convert.

However, when you are getting traffic from search engines coming from specific targeted words and phrases that are relevant to your site you are much more likely to make a sale, get a new subscriber or lead. People searching in the search engines are looking for something specific. Social traffic is just looking around. If you can provide what search traffic is looking for you can convert that traffic like crazy.

Keywords for subscribers

Let’s say you are building a list. You are giving away a great course or ebook to get people to trade their email and name. You are getting some traffic, but if you can find a good keyword related to your course you could get even more. Find a good keyword related to your course, set you opt in page up and then build links to the opt in page using your keyword as your anchor text. If your course is on dog training, and you come up first in Google for dog training, and you are offering a free course on dog training, don’t you think people are going to stop by and sign up? Using keywords is a great way to increase your subscribers.

Get more blog readers

There’s a huge debate raging over content being king right now. Content is good, but if you want to get a ton of targeted traffic to your site you should be using keywords. Find high search volume relevant keywords. Then do the work it takes to get to the top of the search engines for that keyword. Have it linked to a specific post in your blog/site and you will be getting good targeted traffic to that post whether you write daily, weekly or monthly!

Get leads for Network Marketing

This is very similar to getting more subscribers. In fact, you could do exactly the same thing, just have it relate to your business. Set up an opt in page, it can go to an autoresponder, or you can collect phone numbers and email and call the person. The key here is to find keywords that are very relevant to your particular business, not just network marketing in general. You will be more likely to convert that traffic into customers and partners if they are interested in the specific type of business you have to offer. You can always try for work from home, or network marketing type keywords, but they are a pretty competitive group of keywords. You will be better off trying to find keywords related to your industry. Say you are in health/wellness related company. Try to find keywords related to specific products or benefits your products provide. Then put together a course or short report to give people to overcome a problem. This will move them to trade an email address or phone number.

How to sell products with keyword research

If you have a product of your own, or are an affiliate, keyword research should be your best friend. Find keywords related to the product you are selling. Set up a page somewhere, with a review, or information about that product. You can then push your content to the top of the search engine for that specific keyword. For example, I just launched a keyword research step by step tutorial ebook. I found keywords relevant to doing keyword research that I could dominate in the search engines. I put a page up on my blog (you could use the affiliate merchants sales page, or a review page on a free blog or your own blog) and now am in the process of getting ranked for my keywords which are linked to the page about my book. This is the best way to get seriously qualified traffic to my sales page. You can do this for any product or service whether it’s your own or you are an affiliate. It takes some time, but it is well worth it, considering the traffic will keep coming, even after you move on to your next affiliate product. You will still be getting traffic from that organic search listing.

As you can see there are so many ways you can increase your business just by doing simple keyword research. Keyword research should be at the top of any internet marketers list of things to do. If you aren’t using it you are leaving tons of money on the table.

So, you want to start an internet marketing business. Here are three things that you need before you begin the process.

Direction:

To succeed with an internet marketing business, or any business for that matter it is imperative that you have clear and concise direction in mind. The first step in putting a business together is a business plan.

Set goals. Where do you want to be in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, etc.? Commit these goals to paper and use them as a road map to success.

Develop the Right Product:

When creating a product or service you should ensure that it is something that you are passionate about. Do not jump into a niche just because you think it is profitable. Stick with something that you enjoy and are passionate about.

Understand:

If you are considering starting an internet marketing business to “get rich” overnight then you have been watching too many late night infomercials. There is no program or system that will make you an instant success in the internet marketplace.

Developing and operating a successful internet marketing business takes time, patience, and a very strong work ethic. Do not believe those who tell you that you can work part time and earn thousands of dollars per day as soon as you purchase their product.

Choosing the correct keywords is essential to the success of your online marketing campaign, it doesn’t matter whether its Google Ad Words, for more details visit to www.outsource-beginners.com Natural Search or even Article Marketing. A keyword is a describing word or phrase for your product or service. For example you could use the keywords, Internet, Keywords, Marketing, Internet to describe this article.

The internet is an organized place and is adhering to certain standards. You can no longer upload a website and expect people to find it…..no one will find you! Just as an offline business has a Marketing Plan, an online business must have an Internet Marketing Plan. Once you’ve produced traffic to your site, for more details visit to www.mrx-interview.com you have to keep them interested, make the sale, and have them come back again.
