Keyword research is a vital part of building a profitable website. It brings traffic and with traffic comes sales and profit. Learn how to do profitable keyword research and you will quickly learn how to make more money online.

What is keyword research?

Keyword research is the process of finding words and phrases you can target in your website. These are generally words or phrases that are related to your topic, that people looking for your site would use to find you.

What is a good keyword?

A good keyword is a word or phrase that people are actually searching for. The second element of a good keyword is that the word itself is not too competitive.

If you rank for keywords with no one searching on them, you still don’t get traffic. If you choose keywords that are so competitive, even if they have a lot of searches, you still won’t get traffic, because you won’t be able to make it to the top of the search engines for people to find you.

Why do I need good keywords?

Doing good keyword research, and finding good kewyords is important because you will get organic (free) traffic from those keywords.

Choosing profitable keywords is important because it assures you will make money with your website. You can certainly pay for traffic, but using good keywords will get your long term, ongoing, free traffic.

How do keywords get me traffic?

When someone is searching for information online they generally go to a search engine. They put a word or phrase in the search engine that will help them find what they are looking for.

When the results come up for their search if your site comes up on the first page chances are they may click on your site. Your chances increase the higher on page 1 you are.

The more keywords with high search volume, or the more long tail keywords that your site shows up for the more traffic you will get.

How do I start the keyword research process?

First step first, think about what your site offers. Your keywords must be relevant to your content. Once you have figured out some main areas of focus for your site you can begin looking for relevant keywords.

How do I find good keywords?

There are many tools available that will help you to find profitable keywords. Whatever tool you choose you want to make sure they provide information about how many people are searching for that term. You also want to be able to find out how much competition your keyword has. Google now offers search volume numbers on the Adwords Tool. You can use it for free. You can also estimate how much money each keyword will make through adsense using the Google Adwords Tool.

Finding profitable keywords should be the cornerstone of any online business. No matter what kind of business you are running you need traffic, you need eyes on your page. Finding the best keywords for your site will get you that traffic. Then you can start working on converting the traffic to sales.

Trying to compete in the arena of internet marketing without a good keyword research tool (not to mention a free keyword tool) is like going to slay the dragon with your everyday kitchen steak knife. Your tool is too small and you are about to get yourself hurt. Big time. Think about it like this….the army with the most guns will usually win the war. With a free keyword tool you have a single gun, and a small one at that. But what a solid paid keywords research tool will give you is an arsenal of firepower that can be wielded so many ways that most campaigns become virtually indefensible by the competition. It’s the difference between guns and bows and arrows. There is just no way to win if you are using inferior weapons.

A good keywords research tool will provide you intelligence on the competition that the free tools will never deliver. How much content has your competitor published? Where is the strongest competition on the internet for your campaign? What exactly has your competitor published and how are going to beat them? Try answering all those questions with the free tool Google provides you. You will not stand a chance and neither will your campaigns. You should have tool that gives you all this information with the click of a single button in half the amount of time it would take to track it down manually, even if you already know how to do that which is doubtful. I don’t know about you, but I need as much time as I can get. I heard they weren’t making any more of it.

Owning a good keyword research tool is being serious about internet marketing. If you are just playing and dipping your toe in the water to check the temperature, OK. But you will never make any money that way, at least no more than a dinner and movie might cost you. But if you are looking to make a living, you will never compete with the marketers who are already experiencing success in their niches. They have already learned their lesson. Free ain’t really free. There is a price to pay for being cheap and skimping on your keyword research. That price is losing profitable spots on the front page of Google by the people who own a $100 tool and are beating your pants offs at will. Information is king and his sword is a good keywords research tool.

Keywords research tools come in many forms and you can pull your hair out trying to figure out which one is for you. At some point in your search you will have to trust someone and decide to buy one. Until you do, you are no more tan a hobbyist. However, I doubt that is why you are reading this article and if you are still reading at this point, maybe you already know it is time to get serious or get to finding you a new hobby.

This video demonstrates how to conduct your own keyword research for your own website SEO (Search Engine Optimization), explaining how to use one of the best free keyword research tools (Wordtracker) and showing how you should choose your keywords. Visit Top10SEOMistakes.com to find out more.
Help answer the question about Keyword research
How accurate and reliable are statistics from keyword research tools?
My supposed "niche" 'new online income opportunity' had a 24-hr search result of 580 according to a very popular keyword research tool when I started optimizing it. For the past 4 months, it has been fluctuating between 450 to 650 which is fine.

Now, for the past 1 week or so, I find that there are "zero" searches being shown in the 24-hr count. On the contrary, my own website is recording more than 100 hits per day through Google organic search itself.

Likewise another of my keyword 'where is dubai' that is drawing a traffic of average 150 visits per day through Google organic search has a total search of 20 per day according to this super tool.

Any comments?

I thought I was pretty good in using such tools, but now I wonder if I know to use them at all. For how can such well reckoned and vastly used research tools be wrong?

You can build a solid foundation for your campaigns and gather enough information to annihilate your competition if you have a great keyword generator software. Don’t be a fool and skimp on your keyword research tool because people like me will totally destroy your campaign once we find your niche. How can we do that? By finding each and every piece of content you have published for a certain niche and pick it completely apart and by pass you on our way to the front page of Google. All because we found more information, faster than you can and used it to attack your money making system. Don’t be left in the dust with an inferior and free keyword research tool. You’ll be kicking yourself in the pants when you find out what I found out a long time ago. lol

Searching for inbound links?

Want to improve your ranking on Google? Are you looking for a solid, reliable method to consistently build large numbers of inbound links over time?

You’ve come to the right place. Read on…

I have been working on my website for three years now. When I started, I had no inbound links. I was getting traffic from MSN and a little from Yahoo but none from Google.

Today most of my traffic comes from Google. As you know inbound links are important in the Google “algorithm.” It was part of Larry Page’s thesis when he started his search engine experiment.

I’ve tried a lot of different ways to build links. And, after three years, I’ve concluded that the best method is publishing articles through places like Ezinearticles and Isnare.

1. Keywords

Go to SEO Book.com. You’ll find a free keyword tool. Play around with it. Find some keywords that are popular to your subject area. Use them for topics. Work the keyword in a number of times in the article. Use it in the headline.

2. Titles

Article titles or headlines are critical. One of my first articles that I published with Ezine had a very bland title. It got very few views and was published very few times. Then I read Rosalind Gardner’s “Super Affiliate Handbook” and everything changed. She has a great piece on creating interesting article titles. She calls it “The ‘Secret’ Ingredient Every Article Needs.”

Use numerals in the titles. For example, “8 ways to…” or “7 tips to….” And use words like “avoid,” “how to,” “tips” or secrets”. You can probably find some sources on the internet with ideas on headline writing.

Creating snazzy titles is “must know” information so don’t neglect it.

3. Use Proper Grammar and Punctuation

You want webmasters to pick up your articles and post them on their websites and blogs. They may be turned off by bad grammar or incorrect punctuation. Your article will reflect on their site. So make it look good. Use Microsoft Word or WordPerfect and keep the spell checker and grammar checker on at all times.

4. Proofread

James Michener used to say he was not a great writer but he was a great proofreader. After your article is finished, print it out. It is much easier to spot errors on the printed page. Get a red pen. Read the article slowly and carefully. Pretend you are someone else. A competitor, for example. She would find errors in your text. You can do the same. Fix them.

5. Article Submission

There are hundreds of places to submit your article. My current favorites are Ezinearticles.com and Isnare.com.

Ezinearticles has a minimum word requirement of 250 but is very strict about its editorial guidelines. I have published articles at Ezinearticles.com and each article gets a PR (page rank) 2 from Google. This is good. Very good actually. And Ezinearticles is basically the Harvard Law Review of article publishing.

Isnare.com has a minimum word requirement but is much more relaxed editorially. I find I can publish more articles for my time with Isnare even with the higher word requirement. With Ezinearticles I am continually rewriting to meet their strict standards.

There are many other article repository sites and you can find them with a simple search on Google.

6. Distribution

Just getting the article published in a repository is only half the battle. Some webmasters will pick up your articles from the repositories. But, ideally, you want the broadest possible distribution for your article because that way more webmasters become aware of it and publish it.

One way to do that is through “article announcement lists.” These are mostly Yahoo Groups. You can find them through a search on Yahoo. David Viney also publishes a list on page 159 of his very fine book “Getting to the Top on Google.”

For my purposes I have found I get the broadest possible distribution when I publish at Isnare.com. For a small fee ($2.00 per piece) they send the article out to gazillions of sites. And, I start noticing the inbound links multiplying more rapidly. So I pay the $2.00 and feel it is worth the money.

There are other methods of achieving broad distribution. There is software that Rosalind Gardner recommends and claims to use herself that does the same thing. It is rather pricey but if you are writing a lot of articles maybe it is worth the money

7. Resource Box

This is the area after the article where you can put your info. The article is your “give” and the resource box is your “take” as they say at Ezinearticles. There is a whole technology on how to write a concise effective resource box to maximize your return. You can find some great articles on it at Ezinearticles.com. Be sure to include one of the main keywords from your site in your link’s “anchor text.”

Conclusion

Article marketing can generate massive numbers of inbound links. A nice side benefit is that they will also bring you traffic. It takes some time to learn but it is a solid link building and marketing strategy.

You need keywords which are frequently used by web users, yet not in high demand among your competitors. In order to find these keywords, there are many keyword research tools out thee which you can use.

Wordtracker is by far one of the best tools that is available for you when it comes to searching the relevant keywords that you need for your search engine optimization purposes of your website or blogs. Unfortunately this tool comes with a hefty annual or monthly subscription fee. Wordtracker also comes with a free trial tool and you will also have the option to pay a given sum to access the tool for certain duration. Other than Wordtracker, there are other tools including Google AdWords tool and Guidebeam.

Overture’s keyword tool which used to be free and a bit more faster than Wordtracker; in terms of functionality, it was similar to Wordtracker but will not let you know how many other websites are targeting that keyword or key phrase. The tool though was discontinued; the alternative now is Google keyword tool. If you feed in one word, this tool will give you all of the relevant combinations using this word along with the number of searches performed for them. If you entered something which is not being used very much, no results will come up; this tells you that few, if any searches have been done for that word or phrase.

Google Keyword Tool gives you potential keywords for use in your SEO and marketing efforts and gives you the Google statistics on these terms, along with their search engine usage (and trends in the frequency of searches for these terms). Other features of Google Keyword Tool include:

Sorting the results for your chosen keyword by popularity, history in the AdWords program, cost and predicted position.

Simple keyword manipulation, you can select keywords individually or add a large number at once.

Searching for keywords in any URL you specify. The tool can also search on pages linked to or from that URL.

The database of statistics is regularly updated, so that new keywords and key phrases are available as they come up.

Guidebeam guidebeam dotcom is another good keyword tool. Search for a keyword or key phrase and it will also suggest related searches. The statistics it gives for each keyword or phrase is weighted by relevance.

All of these keyword tools can be a great help to those who need to perform keyword research for the purposes of SEO for their own website.

If you’ve done any kind of online market research before, then you’ve probably heard of Google’s keyword tool. Another commonly used free keyword tool is the free version of Wordtracker which gives up to 100 related keyword phrases for any keyword you enter. But there are some lesser known keyword research tools which should be used for all your market research.

Wordtracker is a great tool, but there is actually a newer free version that makes the normal free version obsolete. This new version is called the Free GTrends Tool, which is basically the old tool with the addition of a Google Trends graph. There will be a link beside each result which leads to this graph, plus the statistics for the approximate number of competing pages and amount of daily traffic. This tool makes it easy to identify profitable keyword phrases because it shows you the results while recommending less than 30000 competing pages and more than 100 unique visitors per day with the results so you know instantly whether the keyword phrase is profitable or not. Not only profitable, but easy to dominate as well.

Keyword Browse is a free keyword tool that is less commonly known. While it does not provide numbers like its counterparts, it is probably the best tool out of the group for niche identification. All that is needed is for you to enter a broad search term such as “wine”. The tool will split that niche into two strands (looks like a DNA double-helix without the rungs). One strand will be related keywords and the other one is sub-niches within your given keyword. “Wine” turns out results such as “wine making”. “Wine making” turns out results such as “home wine making” and “wine making kit” which in turn give results such as “home wine making and recipe”.

So while the Google keyword tool is an excellent and accurate tool for market research, it is essential that anybody conducting such research use the aforementioned. The time that will be saved will be invaluable to your business and the sub-niches that you find will be easy to dominate using some simple search engine optimization.

One of the biggest mistakes a website can make is to ignore keyword research. It is doesn’t matter how great your website is or how low your prices are, if nobody can find it. For people to be able to find your website, you need to get your website to show up in search engine queries related to your niche. If you don’t take the time to figure out what keywords people are using to find your products or services, all you can do is blindly guess which keywords to use. You’ll probably be able to guess some good keywords, but there are likely hundreds of other keywords that you haven’t even considered. Some of your choices may not even be worth targeting.

Not Everyone Searches Like You

Too many people assume that they know exactly which phrases people will use when searching for their products or services. To you it may make sense for most people to just type in your exact product name. Not everyone thinks and behaves the same way as you do though. Here are some ways that their searches could vary:

-They may throw in an extra descriptive word.
-They may use a synonym for your product
-They might type a whole sentence or just a 2 word phrase.
-They might use regional spelling or terminology.

These are just some examples or search variations. Some other people might not even know what your product is called. Some people may search for a very broad phrase, while others search for something very precise. You just don’t know really know what people are searching for unless you do some research.

How Good Keywords Will Help Your Website

Choosing the best keywords can have a substantial impact on your bottom line. Good keywords can improve your traffic volume, total sales and conversion rates.

By doing keyword research you can get a good idea of which keywords get the most search volume. This ensures that you are targeting keywords that enough people are searching for, instead of wasting resources on keywords that don’t get enough searches. Advanced keyword research will also help identify which keywords have less competition. These keywords would be easier to get rankings and traffic from.

If you increase your traffic volume, your overall sales are bound to improve, especially if you are targeting quality, relevant keywords.

When you do keyword research you will be able to identify which keywords are most relevant to your niche. Targeting highly relevant keywords improves the quality of traffic on your website. These people are much more likely to buy your products or services.

What If You Ignore Keyword Research

Ignoring keyword research is a little like opening up a store but not bothering to put a sign out front. That sign tells your potential customers what your store offers. If those people don’t know what your store specializes in, they may very well walk right by your store without going in. Not putting a ’sign’ on your website is even worse. Instead of getting a lot of street traffic that might walk into your store, your store is now in a back alley with a sign written in Swahili.

If you don’t do proper keyword research, you either won’t get much traffic or that traffic will be low quality. Usually it will be a combination of both. As a result your sales and profits will suffer. The people looking for your products may never find your website. Essentially you would be wasting the potential of your website. If you want your website to succeed, keyword research is a must!

Seeing your site at the top of the search results for your target phrase as a beautiful thing; however, if it doesn’t drive quality, converting traffic to your site, it’s not doing you any good. The goal of any true optimization campaign is not only to get a site and it’s pages to the top of the results, but to get them to the top of the results for the phrases that matter.

In order to know the most important phrases to target it’s necessary to do some keyword research before ever beginning the promotion of your site. I can tell you from first hand experience, I’ve seen some absolutely beautiful sites, with great content and great products fail miserably because they targeted the wrong phrases.

There are LOT of different ways to research the best keywords to choose. Below I’ve outlined a few of the top that should help you get going.

1) Brainstorming

The obvious place to start. Think of all the ways you know of that your potential visitors could try and find your product or service, but don’t stop there. Once you’ve run out of terms, ask friends and family how they would try and find your product or service when searching online.

You may well be surprised at how others will search for you. Remember, in general, your potential visitors are not experts in your industry and may well use vastly different language to describe your product or service.

Make a list of all the phrases you come up with.

2) Competitors

This is always a good place to continue your research. After all, if there business has been running for a while, it is likely they have done a good bit of the research you need to do, so use their success to your advantage! Go through their site and look at the keywords and phrases they are targeting. Make notes of any phrases that can be used to describe your product or service that you haven’t yet come up with and add them to your list.

3) Keyword Research Sites

These are great. You can type in a phrase and get back phrases that incorporate that phrase, associated phrases, etc. You’ll also generally get a good bit of additional information such as predicted number of searches in a given time frame, etc. There are a number of research sites these days…some free and some paid.

I’ve listed a few below.

Wordtracker – Paid but has a free trial
Keyword Discover – Paid
Good Keywords – Free downloadable program
Google Keyword Tool – Free

Always remember that no keyword research tool is perfect. Some data will be skewed due to numerous reasons, but they are ideal for finding additional keywords and phrases you may have never thought of.

4) Old School Research

For this break out the dictionary and the thesaurus. You do have those don’t’ you? Well, luckily if not, you can use some online ones as well. You’d be surprised at the great ideas you can get just by using a thesaurus.

By the time you’ve gone through all 4 steps above, you should have a pretty exhaustive list of phrases that can be used to find your product or service. If you have multiple products and services, you will want to repeat the above steps for each product/service you offer.

Once you’ve got your list you want to focus your pages on the phrases you’ve generated. I try and hit about 2-3 phrases per page. In doing this you’ll keep the focus of each page tight and have the best chance of ranking for that pages target phrase.

I’ll see you at the top!

Keyword research is the lifeblood of a search engine marketing campaign – either natural or paid search. If you don’t promote your site with the right keywords, you will waste a lot of time and money for nothing. The obvious place to start your keyword research for a pay per click campaign is the search engine’s own keyword tool. But you can go far beyond that to uncover keywords that are very effective for your business. Following are eight strategies for creating keyword lists.

1. Comb your web site for keywords. Every different way you have described your business on your site is a new keyword or set of keywords.

2. Think from your customer’s perspective. Are the words you use to describe your business really the way other people would describe it? Ask around. Whatever words people are using to search for your kind of business are the words you need to target, regardless of what terms are used in your industry. Don’t get so wrapped up in industry jargon that you end up paying for ineffective keywords.

3. Nichebot. We really like this web site. First sign up for an account. It’s free to sign up. Then type a starting keyword related to your service or product in the text box at the top of the page and hit the Search button. You can change the middle dropdown list to “Overture” to get a better idea of the actual keywords people are using to search in Yahoo!. But don’t overlook the “Word Tracker” option, which will generate a lot of keyword data.

The data will be returned with information such as the number of searches performed for each keyword, the amount of competition, and the KEI for each keyword (”KEI”, which stands for “Keyword Effectiveness Index”, is a value for the keyword based on a formula that considers the number of searches for the keyword relative to the number of directly competing web pages).

4. You can also look through your web logs for the search terms people have used on your web site or to find your web site. This is critical data that few businesses tap into. If people are already using particular keywords to find your site, then those keywords likely warrant extra promotion.

5. If you sell products, you can combine brands with attributes of the products (color, width, size, etc.) to create many specific, late buying cycle keywords. For instance, if someone is searching for “laptop computers” they are likely in an early stage of doing research in the process of purchasing a laptop computer. But if a person is searching or “HP Pavilion 15 inch laptop”, that indicates that he is further along in the buying process because he is researching a specific brand and screen size of laptop.

6. Competitors’ brand names. Most search engines’ official position on bidding on your competitors’ trademarks is that you can only do it if you are the owner of the trademark, a reseller of the company’s goods, or if you provide “substantive” information about the company. I suggest you bid on keywords that contain the brand, but don’t use the brand name in your ads.

For instance, if you were marketing a line of tennis shoes, you might want to create one generic keyword group that contained brands names such as “Nike”, “Reebok” and “Adidas”, and then write an ad targeting purchasers of tennis shoes in a general way, without referencing any of the competition. Some of the brand name keywords may get declined, but probably not all of them.

7. Try to think of keywords that reflect different stages of the searcher’s buying cycle. Early in the buying cycle, they will be looking for more general information about your type of service or products. Later in the buying cycle, when they are much closer to making a decision and doing business, they will use more specific keywords, which might include particular brands and models, or even locations to make a purchase. Try to use keywords that cover the entire buying cycle. It may be worth bidding higher for the more specific keywords because your conversion rate for those keywords should be higher.

8. Spy on your competitors. There are a couple of online services, such as SpyFu and KeywordSpy, that allow you to see what keywords your competitors are bidding on in their paid search campaigns. This information can be very useful. But don’t just assume that your competitors are smarter than you are. You will still need to test to see which of their keywords are effective.

And remember that you are looking for groups of keywords. Unless your campaign is very small, it is unlikely you will want to run a 1:1 ratio of keywords to ads. It will be a very unruly number of ads to have to create and monitor. So you will be assigning ads to small groups of related keywords, and writing ad copy that applies to all of the keywords. So if you’re going to run ads for “gardening”, you might as well run them for “flower gardening”, “spring garden”, and “planting”. The major search engines have some nice dynamic features that make it pretty easy to customize an ad for multiple keywords.

Using the above strategies, you should be able to greatly expand the number of keywords in your paid search campaigns, and generate many new keyword ideas for natural search. I recommend that you first use your paid search campaign to generate data related to your keywords, and then optimize your site for those keywords that convert at the highest rate, unless the keywords are too competitive to target with SEO.

WHY?
Hi everybody!

Thank you for your answers,

Question: I have reviewed some keyword research tools, and saw a great difference between them. For example Wordtracker gives for "interesting facts" – 44077 daily searches, while Trellian's Keyword Discovery tool says that it is 114. How it can be?

We all know that no keyword research tool has accurate numbers, but why they have so big differences?

Keyword research is like getting into the minds of your prospects. If you use an analytic tool to find out exactly what people are searching for in your niche, you can use those keywords to create content that answers all of their questions and relates to their interests. By satisfying the needs of your website visitors with informative content, you improve your credibility and thus boost your online business. Here are the 5 most important factors you should consider when conducting keyword research.

1. Find a Good Research Tool

There are numerous free keyword research tools out there and many people will argue that the free tools are all you need. Some examples of free tools include Google’s Adwords tool and the free search term suggestion tool by Keyword Discovery. However, these tools are limited in nature. If you’re willing to shell out around $40 per month, you can get your hands on a keyword tool that provides you with more information such as how many competing sites are targeting certain keywords in your niche.

2. Set Realistic Goals

If you are in a competitive niche, don’t aim for the keywords that have both high search volume and high competition. Those keywords will be incredibly difficult to rank for in the beginning. Instead, focus on ranking for keywords with lower search volume and less competition. When combined, these so-called long tail keywords can bring you decent traffic. The best keywords however are the keywords that have high traffic and little competition but they are obviously harder to find. Don’t ignore misspelled keywords either. There are some popular keywords that people commonly misspell when conducting searches. Incorporate those misspelled keywords into your content to give your site an edge over the competition.

3. Be Specific

If you are an accountant in Tucson, Arizona, don’t aim to rank for the keyword, “accountant.” Get specific so people who need exactly what you offer can find you with ease. For example, if you are an accountant who provides litigation support in Tucson, make sure the keyword phrases you use include those terms so you reach your target market.

4. Test Your Keywords with a PPC Campaign

Once you do your initial keyword research, create a landing page with those keywords and set up a PPC campaign. Use an analytic tool to find out how many people land on your page and with what search terms. You can also determine how much time they spent on your landing page and if you achieved any conversions. Using a PPC campaign prior to launching your complete SEO campaign will help you narrow down your keyword list to only the most effective ones.

5. Use LSI Keywords

Instead of just targeting the obvious keywords in your niche, it’s important to find keyword phrases that are associated with your topic. LSI stands for “latent semantic indexing.” It might sound like confusing jargon but it’s quite simple. All you have to do is use an LSI keyword tool, which will help you generate relevant keywords. Sprinkling LSI keywords in your content allows you to enhance your opportunities to receive search engine traffic. Search engines value websites that provide informational content and the more related keywords your content focuses on, the more value and depth it is perceived to have.

Utilize these keyword research strategies and you’ll be well on your way to increasing traffic to your site. When you’re starting out, it’s a good idea to target long tail keywords and very specific keywords. This will help you establish your website in the beginning. From there you can move on to the more competitive keywords in your niche to ultimately build a SEO online presence.
