Keyword research in undoubtedly one of the most important aspects to consider when setting up your own online home business.

If you don’t target your keyword phrases effectively then you will be wasting both time and effort, performing tasks that will never pay off no matter how hard you try.

Here are some points to consider when conducting your keyword research:

1. Consider which tools you are going to use and save them to a one of your favourites folders for easy and frequent access. There are even some tools out there that allow you to download a tool bar with all the tools readily available. There are numerous free tools, many of which are very useful. I personally, use a tool called Keyword Elite to conduct my online keyword research.

2. What keyphrases are you going to target? – If you have very few resources available and are new to online marketing then it is advisable that you target ‘long tail’ keyword phrases. These are keyword phrases with 3-5 words, which make them a lot less competitive and easier to attain top rankings in the search engines.

3. Use a variety of keyword phrases for each campaign – Are you using the keywords in your website content or are they primarily for backlinking text? I would find two or three less competitive keyword phrases for each target market and use these to create backlinks through article submissions. Then, take ten different variations of these keyword phrases and use them in your website content.

4. Target profitable keyword phrases – Obviously the main aim of keyword research is to find profitable keywords. How can we do that? One effective way to target buyers and also find less competitive search terms is to find keyword phrases that contain certain words like, ‘buy’ as in ‘buy keyword research tool’.

5. Find untapped markets – Many of your competitors will be targeting all the same keyword phrases. This is where they fall down. Find obscure phrases that your target are already searching for and go after these by specifically writing articles based on these to achieve better or top search engine rankings. One good way to do this is by scanning your current website visitors and finding the keyword terms that sent them to your site.

Keyword research is only a beginning in building a profitable online business but it is an aspect of your marketing that cannot be overlooked. Effective keyword research is essential to ensure your business becomes a huge success and not a dismal failure.

I recall the tutorial was plugging a webmaster program (I think part of the program's name had the word "site" in it, but that's probably not very helpful!) and was very obviously an affiliate trying to sell – but the tutorial was still extremely useful and I would love to refresh my memory if I can find it again.

Copyright (c) 2009 Titus Hoskins

After years of running websites and earning a full-time online income, I am constantly reminded that it all comes down to keywords. Actually, it all comes down to obtaining top rankings for your profitable keywords in the search engines, mainly Google.

And that statement has to be refined even further, it’s all about obtaining top keyword rankings and keeping them at the top. You must consistently keep your keywords in the top spots on that all important first page of SERPs since your keyword rankings can make or break your online marketing.

If you’re targeting extremely competitive and profitable keywords you will have your work cut out for you; unless you have tons of money to buy your way (links) into the top spots, expect to spend months if not years, getting to those top listings. Google has frowned upon link buying and has taken steps to fight it, but this practice is still widespread throughout the web.

Most beginning and honest webmasters want to take the proper route and earn those top rankings by providing good quality content that web users will actually find helpful and useful. They build those links the natural way by offering viral link bait in the form of videos, ebooks, articles, reports… all branded with backlinks to their sites.

Gradually over time, these links will build up and your keyword rankings will go up in the search engines. People will find your content and bookmark it in all the social bookmark sites like Digg, Facebook, MySpace… and your rankings will climb even faster.

However, since keyword marketing has become extremely competitive, you do need a little help with achieving those top rankings. Over the years I have tested and used many keyword tools and I have listed some of the best ones below. (Just Google to find links to these tools and programs.)

Internet Success Spider

One of the first keyword tools I ever used was The Internet Success Spider by Neil Shearing which is now free. The Spider is a very simple, yet powerful keyword tool because it shows you the major players in your keyword niche. It slowly works in the background to give you valuable information on your keywords. I realized very quickly, with online marketing (like most things in life) information is what separates the losers from the winners.

Keyword Elite

Later, I tried and am still using Keyword Elite by Brad Callen, it remains one of the best keyword research tools on the market. I can directly link many of my keyword successes to my early use of this tool.

Brad Callen simply creates some of the best marketing tools for online webmasters and marketers. KE is no exception. It will do some very comprehensive keyword research for you and let you easily arrange that information. Keyword Elite has earned a well deserved reputation as a very useful marketing tool.

Brainstorm It – Site Build It

Another, perhaps even more powerful keyword tool is Brainstorm It! which is offered through the Site Build It marketing/hosting system run by Ken Evoy. This is a powerful keyword analyzer and finder, which is now in its third version.

SBI run by Ken Evoy creates many tools for webmasters and Brainstorm It, Version 3 is simply one of the best. This keyword tool will do both Vertical and Lateral keyword research to give the most comprehensive array of information for your online marketing. Only negative, you only get so many Wordtracker credits and you have to pay extra when those run out. Actually, Wordtracker should be at the top of any keyword tool list, but I have mainly used it in conjunction with other programs like Brainstorm It.

Google Keyword Tool

Then again there is the Google own keyword system run through it’s Adwords program. Like everything Google does, this keyword tool can be very helpful especially for the novice online marketer.

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

MSN Commercial Intention Of Keywords

Not to be outdone, another helpful tool is Microsoft’s Online Commercial Intention tool, which tells the probability your chosen keyword has a commercial value to it:

http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/Default.aspx

SeoBook Online Keyword Tool

For very quick keyword references, I like using Aaron Wall’s keyword tool on his Seobook site. It’s quick and gives very good stats for your chosen keywords.

SeoQuake

Still yet another SEO (sort of related to keywords) is the SeoQuake Toolbar which you can run on Firefox. It will slow down your browser but it will cough up valuable information about your own site and more importantly, it will give you valuable information on your competitors’ sites. One feature that I find very helpful is the SEM Rank and SEM Price, which tells you how much your Search Engine keyword traffic is worth.

Plus, you must not ignore your website stats and traffic logs for they can supply you with your most valuable keyword information regarding your site. Closely examine which keyword phrases are bringing in the traffic and/or sales. Develop these keywords with your online marketing, especially any “long tail” keyword phrases visitors are using to find your site or products. These longer keyword phrases have proven to be the most profitable because many times consumers using these phrases already have their minds made up on what they’re going to buy.

Why am I using all these keyword tools?

Simply because obtaining and keeping top rankings for my chosen keywords is my livelihood. Unless I can keep that targeted traffic coming from these keywords via the search engines; it’s game over. Therefore, I use all the tools and information I can gather in order to keep those keywords at the top.

Google is always changing, you really have to stay on your game if you want to keep your keywords at the top. It all boils down to producing quality content web surfers need and want. The SEO pretty much takes care of itself as long as you keep promoting your keywords with good viral branded content like videos, articles, ebooks, PDF reports… and you must mix up your online link building to include links from such places as Facebook, Digg, Google Bookmarks, MySpace… I have always used the free “Addthis” button to all my important content and this has resulted in 100’s of free links that your visitors will build for you!

I also believe you have to be careful when using viral articles to vary your anchor text (clickable part of a link) so that you don’t have the same keyword phrase repeated 100’s of times across the web. Just use different versions of your keyword phrase and if you can, get those keyword links in the body of the article, as near to the top of the page as you can. This will make your link building look much more natural in the eyes of the search engines, especially Google.

Overall, you must have hundreds, if not thousands of keywords that you’re targeting with your online marketing. You must constantly keep building links for those keywords from related sites on the web. Sometimes it is helpful to truly view your keywords as organic, something that keeps growing naturally on its own. But you must first build a solid foundation with good quality content and then keep nurturing those keywords with good quality link bait so that others will bookmark, recommend and link to your keyword content.

Over the years, if there is anything I have learned about keywords which always holds true, it is this: you must be persistent. You must keep at it: building links, building content… it will usually take months, if not years, to get those top rankings for very competitive keywords and it will take some further work to consistently keep those keywords in the top positions. But you will quickly learn keywords are well worth it since they can easily make or break your online marketing.

Watch the video related to what is keyword marketing

The function of the search engine is to provide the end user with the most relevant results to the keyword or phrase submitted; in this way they find the pages that contain the most appropriate content in relation to the end users request.

It is therefore of paramount importance that you ensure your site is fully optimized for the likely terms your potential website visitor will be using when searching. For this reason keyword marketing research is an important facet of online marketing; without the most suitable keywords and optimized content your site could remain undiscovered.

Try placing yourself in the position of the potential website visitor, what keywords should you aim for?

Look at your site content; what would you use as search criteria?

What questions would you ask the search engine to track down as a solution to your problem?

These are only some of the many questions to consider whilst conducting your keyword marketing research; they are crucial to locate targeted traffic and the success of your website. Creating lists by hand is a way to start but is far from ideal, a much better means of achieving the best results in this area is to use a quality tool; an investment in such a tool can make keyword marketing research almost effortless. With manual research you could be wasting literally hours a day when there is software available that will allow you to conduct your keyword marketing research quickly and efficiently. These types of software really are push button easy.

You must also consider the following two points when choosing the best words. Firstly, what level of searches does the word or phrase receive per month; there is little point wasting your time optimizing your content on a keyword or phrase that receives no more than twenty searches per month. You should instead be selecting a word or phrase that receives between a few hundred to a few thousand per month. Secondly, try to identify keywords that have little competition; choosing a highly competitive keyword may result in your site never being found. Search engines are there to provide a service for their users. Their function is to provide the user with the best possible results in relation to the conducted search. You should ensure that you place your site in front of as many of these searchers as possible.

The trick is to rank for the many keywords that achieve hundreds or thousands of searches per month; with little competition these will be far more useful than keywords that get thousands to tens of thousands of searches per month with a lot of competition.

The majority of tools will allow you to locate keywords with high monthly search figures; using these tools will mean you can avoid wasting time on optimizing useless or ineffective keywords. But most importantly they will locate the words related to your search that have little or no competition. The keyword marketing research tools that you buy are far more robust and powerful than the many free tools available; if you seriously wish to achieve prominent site ranking and avoid time wasted on optimizing the wrong words a good quality keyword tool is essential.

Effective Internet Keyword Marketing Online

Using keyword placement to drive traffic to a website is the latest trend in internet marketing. Pay Per Click (PPC) is an effective internet marketing tool in which an advertiser only pays its host whenever its ad is clicked. PPC ads are generally hosted on search engines and ad networks, as well as blogs and other content sites.

PPC advertising usually involves the placement of ads on specific websites according to keyword matching. This is accomplished with the use of software designed to match ads that contain keywords which are relevant to the content of the site on which they will be placed. The process of choosing relevant and popular keywords is both an art and a science.

Completing an effective internet keyword marketing online website search can be next to impossible. Free PPC advertising can be found, but most systems require some seed money in order to get started. As the results are in no way guaranteed, this approach is not for the faint at heart. It is best to choose a reputable firm such as Wag the Dog Marketing.

Searching for free website advertising information may provide lots of options, but how can an advertiser be sure his ads will be placed on relevant content websites? A free marketing company might have a huge mailing list, but if it attempts to sell arts and crafts supplies on a World of Warcraft blog, results will be disappointing.

Hottest Topic in Marketing

Internet keyword marketing online is a hot topic on the World Wide Web. Everyone claims to have the secret formula for success, but few have the integrity of Wag the Dog Marketing. Wag the Dog Marketing ensures an advertiser’s campaign dollars return money to the bottom line. Other marketing companies only pad their own pockets.

Every great manager knows it is not necessary to know all of the answers as long as one knows where to find them. Why waste time searching for the best content websites for ads when a firm such as Wag the Dog Marketing already has this information at their disposal? Wag the Dog Marketing has an array of resources readily available on short notice.

Maximizing Results for All

Wag the Dog Marketing offers internet keyword marketing online services for the convenience of both publishers and advertisers. These include creative design, selling advertising inventory, optimization of results, and data reporting. Wag the Dog Marketing believes maximizing results for both sides is the most effective way to build revenue, long term.

Advertisers searching for the most effective website marketing at the best price are often bombarded by offers that sound way too good to be true. Many marketing companies focus on the publisher’s needs instead of the advertiser’s needs. The best internet marketing firm is one that effectively balances the needs of both publishers and advertisers.

Relevant Ad Placement

When searching for internet keyword marketing online, remember to research reputable paid marketing firms such as Wag the Dog Marketing. Such organizations can provide thousands of page impressions per month, generating profit from day one. Other online advertising programs yield little traffic.

Wag the Dog Marketing only considers publishers of “quality content, products, or services with at least 80% U.S. traffic and two million monthly page views available for advertising placements.” Wag the Dog Marketing does all the legwork to ensure its customers’ ads only appear on the most reputable and relevant websites.

A keyword can be defined as a word or phrase that can be utilized in searching for a website. Keywords can be placed in titles, a body of text, online catalogs, abstracts, indexes, notes and subject headings. Using the right keywords is very important, and keyword optimization, if done correctly, will aid in driving traffic to your site. In order to know which keywords will be most effective for your site, there are a few things that need to be done:

• Examine your websites’ first page; make sure that it contains a central theme.
• Find the words or phrases that best describe the content on the websites’ first page.
• Make a list of the aforementioned words and/or phrases.
• Do not use highly popular keywords that are being used by a thousand other websites.
• Figure out the popularity of the words you have chosen by utilizing a keyword directory or one of the many keyword suggestion tools.
• You can now narrow your list down to just a few optimal words.

Use the above process for every one of your pages, and you will be able to more effectively optimize the power of your keywords. Remember that when you are determining what keywords will work best for your site, that there are different types of keywords. Knowing about each type will aid in the optimization of your keywords.

When determining what words to use as your keywords, you should first determine what the focus of your website is, what value the websites’ information has to offer, as well as who your target audience is. Knowing these particulars in advance will help you to choose keywords that will be optimal for your website.

Types of Keywords

Generally, keywords can be grouped into three different categories. These categories are as follows:

• Theme Keywords- these types of keywords are used to target a highly specific audience of people. They are normally used on every single page of the site, and are quite effective at boosting page rank.
• Single-word Keywords-these types of keywords are normally used between 5 and 7 times on a page, and are used to target a wide, general audience.
• Multiple-word Keywords- these types of keywords, sometimes referred to as “keyword phrases”, are used to target a specific audience, usually in a specific location. These types of keywords are also good at improving page rank.

Tools to Use

There are many tools available that will allow you to examine just which keywords are overused, which ones are not, and which keywords will best benefit you and your website. Since there are so many tools available, you will need to figure out the one that you are more comfortable using. Some keyword tools are free, while for others there is a charge. Some of the tools that can help you find good keywords for your site are:

• Keyword Search Tools
• Keyword Research Tools
• Keyword Lists
• Keyword Software
• Keyword Databases

All of these tools can be located on the World Wide Web, and will help you in researching certain keywords and phrases and that you may wish to use for your website.

Although finding good, effective keywords can prove to be a bit time consuming, it is better to invest a little more time in order to achieve the best results. Rushing through the process of choosing keywords and incorporating them into the content of your site will just be wasted time, as it will not get traffic to your site, nor will it improve your page rankings with the search engines.

With so many tools and processes available for you to use in your quest to find the right keywords, with a bit of time and patience you should be able to get your site optimized with the right keywords that will prove to be highly effective. Remember that good keywords and keyword phrases are vital to the life of your website. Make the task of finding good keywords a top priority when it comes to your website. You may be pleasantly surprised when your websites’ traffic increases and your page rank goes up with the search engines; all because of a few, well-placed keywords!

I recently met with a business owner that sells manufactured homes (better known as mobile homes). The company is established and has decent branding, but lacks a Web site (thus the reason I was there). Preliminary meetings with our prospective clients normally involve quite a bit of investigation into the business, their primary target audience, and brainstorming about potential keywords. During the meeting I learned about his industry, clients, and the challenges his business encounters. He explained very clearly that they despise the term “Mobile Home” and preferred the terms “Manufactured Housing” or “Modular Homes.” I am a Real Estate Broker and have seen this marketing shift in the last several years and was not surprised.

After the meeting was over and I got back to the office to begin the research, it quickly became obvious that the business owner was not going to like what I was going to tell him. The term “mobile home” was searched approximately 5x’s more than “modular home.” If he wants to build an effective Web site for his company, he would need to optimize for the term “mobile home” – the term he despises.

This story is a prime example of what keyword research is all about. SEO is not just about making the site rank high in the search engines, it’s about doing market research and then targeting the desired traffic. Please don’t misunderstand, just because one keyword has more traffic than another, it doesn’t mean it is better for your business to optimize for that keyword. For example: As a Real Estate Broker would it be smarter to optimize for “homes for sale” (A) or “Real Estate Agent” (B)? Even though (A) may have 10x’s the amount of traffic; an individual that searches for (B) is likely a better target market. Some people can browse for homes for years without actually buying, while someone searching for the services of a Real Estate Agent is more likely to convert.

Keyword research and analysis is the basic foundation of SEO work. It can mean the difference of success or failure for your online marketing strategy. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in campaigns that actually increased specific keyword traffic via integration of Offline and Online marketing techniques. In most cases though, the human user is the driving factor which determines the direction of your SEO efforts and Web design.

You need keywords which are frequently used by web users, yet not in high demand among your competitors. In order to find these keywords, there are many keyword research tools out thee which you can use.

Wordtracker is by far one of the best tools that is available for you when it comes to searching the relevant keywords that you need for your search engine optimization purposes of your website or blogs. Unfortunately this tool comes with a hefty annual or monthly subscription fee. Wordtracker also comes with a free trial tool and you will also have the option to pay a given sum to access the tool for certain duration. Other than Wordtracker, there are other tools including Google AdWords tool and Guidebeam.

Overture’s keyword tool which used to be free and a bit more faster than Wordtracker; in terms of functionality, it was similar to Wordtracker but will not let you know how many other websites are targeting that keyword or key phrase. The tool though was discontinued; the alternative now is Google keyword tool. If you feed in one word, this tool will give you all of the relevant combinations using this word along with the number of searches performed for them. If you entered something which is not being used very much, no results will come up; this tells you that few, if any searches have been done for that word or phrase.

Google Keyword Tool gives you potential keywords for use in your SEO and marketing efforts and gives you the Google statistics on these terms, along with their search engine usage (and trends in the frequency of searches for these terms). Other features of Google Keyword Tool include:

Sorting the results for your chosen keyword by popularity, history in the AdWords program, cost and predicted position.

Simple keyword manipulation, you can select keywords individually or add a large number at once.

Searching for keywords in any URL you specify. The tool can also search on pages linked to or from that URL.

The database of statistics is regularly updated, so that new keywords and key phrases are available as they come up.

Guidebeam guidebeam dotcom is another good keyword tool. Search for a keyword or key phrase and it will also suggest related searches. The statistics it gives for each keyword or phrase is weighted by relevance.

All of these keyword tools can be a great help to those who need to perform keyword research for the purposes of SEO for their own website.

Keyword research is the lifeblood of a search engine marketing campaign – either natural or paid search. If you don’t promote your site with the right keywords, you will waste a lot of time and money for nothing. The obvious place to start your keyword research for a pay per click campaign is the search engine’s own keyword tool. But you can go far beyond that to uncover keywords that are very effective for your business. Following are eight strategies for creating keyword lists.

1. Comb your web site for keywords. Every different way you have described your business on your site is a new keyword or set of keywords.

2. Think from your customer’s perspective. Are the words you use to describe your business really the way other people would describe it? Ask around. Whatever words people are using to search for your kind of business are the words you need to target, regardless of what terms are used in your industry. Don’t get so wrapped up in industry jargon that you end up paying for ineffective keywords.

3. Nichebot. We really like this web site. First sign up for an account. It’s free to sign up. Then type a starting keyword related to your service or product in the text box at the top of the page and hit the Search button. You can change the middle dropdown list to “Overture” to get a better idea of the actual keywords people are using to search in Yahoo!. But don’t overlook the “Word Tracker” option, which will generate a lot of keyword data.

The data will be returned with information such as the number of searches performed for each keyword, the amount of competition, and the KEI for each keyword (”KEI”, which stands for “Keyword Effectiveness Index”, is a value for the keyword based on a formula that considers the number of searches for the keyword relative to the number of directly competing web pages).

4. You can also look through your web logs for the search terms people have used on your web site or to find your web site. This is critical data that few businesses tap into. If people are already using particular keywords to find your site, then those keywords likely warrant extra promotion.

5. If you sell products, you can combine brands with attributes of the products (color, width, size, etc.) to create many specific, late buying cycle keywords. For instance, if someone is searching for “laptop computers” they are likely in an early stage of doing research in the process of purchasing a laptop computer. But if a person is searching or “HP Pavilion 15 inch laptop”, that indicates that he is further along in the buying process because he is researching a specific brand and screen size of laptop.

6. Competitors’ brand names. Most search engines’ official position on bidding on your competitors’ trademarks is that you can only do it if you are the owner of the trademark, a reseller of the company’s goods, or if you provide “substantive” information about the company. I suggest you bid on keywords that contain the brand, but don’t use the brand name in your ads.

For instance, if you were marketing a line of tennis shoes, you might want to create one generic keyword group that contained brands names such as “Nike”, “Reebok” and “Adidas”, and then write an ad targeting purchasers of tennis shoes in a general way, without referencing any of the competition. Some of the brand name keywords may get declined, but probably not all of them.

7. Try to think of keywords that reflect different stages of the searcher’s buying cycle. Early in the buying cycle, they will be looking for more general information about your type of service or products. Later in the buying cycle, when they are much closer to making a decision and doing business, they will use more specific keywords, which might include particular brands and models, or even locations to make a purchase. Try to use keywords that cover the entire buying cycle. It may be worth bidding higher for the more specific keywords because your conversion rate for those keywords should be higher.

8. Spy on your competitors. There are a couple of online services, such as SpyFu and KeywordSpy, that allow you to see what keywords your competitors are bidding on in their paid search campaigns. This information can be very useful. But don’t just assume that your competitors are smarter than you are. You will still need to test to see which of their keywords are effective.

And remember that you are looking for groups of keywords. Unless your campaign is very small, it is unlikely you will want to run a 1:1 ratio of keywords to ads. It will be a very unruly number of ads to have to create and monitor. So you will be assigning ads to small groups of related keywords, and writing ad copy that applies to all of the keywords. So if you’re going to run ads for “gardening”, you might as well run them for “flower gardening”, “spring garden”, and “planting”. The major search engines have some nice dynamic features that make it pretty easy to customize an ad for multiple keywords.

Using the above strategies, you should be able to greatly expand the number of keywords in your paid search campaigns, and generate many new keyword ideas for natural search. I recommend that you first use your paid search campaign to generate data related to your keywords, and then optimize your site for those keywords that convert at the highest rate, unless the keywords are too competitive to target with SEO.

WHY?
Hi everybody!

Thank you for your answers,

Question: I have reviewed some keyword research tools, and saw a great difference between them. For example Wordtracker gives for "interesting facts" – 44077 daily searches, while Trellian's Keyword Discovery tool says that it is 114. How it can be?

We all know that no keyword research tool has accurate numbers, but why they have so big differences?

Have you been looking around and browsing several ways to build links for your website? Perhaps you have thought of a main keyword which could be attributed to your site and would describe the site as a whole? Some people agree that their sites can be summarized in just one word, for instance people who have dating related sites may summarize their site using the word “dating”, others who offer internet marketing services may use several terms which are descriptive to their activities such as “SEO”, “marketing” and such.

Following this train of thought we can conclude that every single site can be “tagged”, this special way to redefine a word and your site is actually a very useful idea which has been recently developed and changes the way online directories do business with the people they list and how those sites can get better results in the search engines by getting hard links which use the core keyword for their site.

People who have a network of sites or just one which could use more than one term to define it are able to search these keywords from a robust dictionary incorporated in such directories.

In addition, if you are new to the entire link building process and would like to know what keywords are ranking or have good traffic in Google you can choose to do your own research and find the best keyword for your site or you can use built in tools in these new keyword based directories which allow you to see Google’s trends for hot words.

As you know, google analyzes traffic trends every month and provide such data in the form of flexible charts, link building enthusiasts are able to use this data to determine which keyword term will bring them the most traffic. Unlike other web directory platforms, word based directories allow the links to be very visible in the site’s home page and can even be featured, in traditional directories you would have a big list of text links which use very small fonts and make it hard for the surfer to differentiate one from the other.

The keyword market is constantly expanding as more terms are used to define not only concepts but websites, so if you think your site is “cool” then you might want to use such keyword which might bring you great traffic. Keywords, terms and words are all used to give meaning to things, this is basic just common sense, using the same idea in your link building campaign can provide great results while allowing your visitors to think of your site first when they read a specific keyword.

If you pursue a keyword or key phrase that is either under searched or has too much competition, you can end up setting yourself back a great deal of time.
