If you get your keywords right, Google and Yahoo and MSN will send you all the traffic you want. But if you get your keywords wrong, your website will be like a ghost town.

You will only get lots of free search engine traffic when you give the search engines what they want. It isn’t difficult when you know how, it’s just a matter of knowing the steps to take and finding the right keyword to target.

Keyword Research is crucial if you want to get free search engine traffic

Keyword research involves finding the phrases that your potential customers type into Google when they are looking for information. Before you write anything, you need to discover the phrases you need to target to make sure your site appears on the first page of search results. Keyword research should be the first step before you write any content.

Create a master list of keywords

You could use the Google trends free keyword tool from Wordtracker, it is a good starting point for keyword research.

http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/

When you type your primary keyword into the search box it will give you the number of daily searches and show you how much competition there is for each keyword. When you use the keyword research tool, you are aiming to find keywords that have low competition, because they are easier to rank for.

Go to the tool and type in a broad keyword that describes your niche. The keyword research tool will return the top 100 keywords with that word in them. You will get an estimate of how many searches there are each day.

Click on the G button to see how much competition there is for that keyword. You will immediately see how much competition there is for that keyword in Google and the actual number of daily visitors from the number 1 spot in Google for that phrase.

Ideally you want there to be less than 30,000 competing pages and at least 100 visitors a day. But as long as the keyword phrases is getting some traffic and hasn’t got much competition it is a keyword worth targeting because it will be easy to rank on the first page of search results.

Most people make the mistake of targeting keywords that have lots of competition and wonder why they have hardly any visitors to their website.

When you are starting out, it is much easier to get on the first page of search results when you target multiple keywords that have a relatively small amount of traffic and little competition. The small streams of traffic become a big stream when combined.

Multiple listings on the first page of search results can add up to a lot of traffic, so dig out a few good keywords that don’t have a lot of competition and are easy to get ranked on the first page of search results. and watch your visitor numbers soar.

Keyword research is the lifeblood of a search engine marketing campaign – either natural or paid search. If you don’t promote your site with the right keywords, you will waste a lot of time and money for nothing. The obvious place to start your keyword research for a pay per click campaign is the search engine’s own keyword tool. But you can go far beyond that to uncover keywords that are very effective for your business. Following are eight strategies for creating keyword lists.

1. Comb your web site for keywords. Every different way you have described your business on your site is a new keyword or set of keywords.

2. Think from your customer’s perspective. Are the words you use to describe your business really the way other people would describe it? Ask around. Whatever words people are using to search for your kind of business are the words you need to target, regardless of what terms are used in your industry. Don’t get so wrapped up in industry jargon that you end up paying for ineffective keywords.

3. Nichebot. We really like this web site. First sign up for an account. It’s free to sign up. Then type a starting keyword related to your service or product in the text box at the top of the page and hit the Search button. You can change the middle dropdown list to “Overture” to get a better idea of the actual keywords people are using to search in Yahoo!. But don’t overlook the “Word Tracker” option, which will generate a lot of keyword data.

The data will be returned with information such as the number of searches performed for each keyword, the amount of competition, and the KEI for each keyword (”KEI”, which stands for “Keyword Effectiveness Index”, is a value for the keyword based on a formula that considers the number of searches for the keyword relative to the number of directly competing web pages).

4. You can also look through your web logs for the search terms people have used on your web site or to find your web site. This is critical data that few businesses tap into. If people are already using particular keywords to find your site, then those keywords likely warrant extra promotion.

5. If you sell products, you can combine brands with attributes of the products (color, width, size, etc.) to create many specific, late buying cycle keywords. For instance, if someone is searching for “laptop computers” they are likely in an early stage of doing research in the process of purchasing a laptop computer. But if a person is searching or “HP Pavilion 15 inch laptop”, that indicates that he is further along in the buying process because he is researching a specific brand and screen size of laptop.

6. Competitors’ brand names. Most search engines’ official position on bidding on your competitors’ trademarks is that you can only do it if you are the owner of the trademark, a reseller of the company’s goods, or if you provide “substantive” information about the company. I suggest you bid on keywords that contain the brand, but don’t use the brand name in your ads.

For instance, if you were marketing a line of tennis shoes, you might want to create one generic keyword group that contained brands names such as “Nike”, “Reebok” and “Adidas”, and then write an ad targeting purchasers of tennis shoes in a general way, without referencing any of the competition. Some of the brand name keywords may get declined, but probably not all of them.

7. Try to think of keywords that reflect different stages of the searcher’s buying cycle. Early in the buying cycle, they will be looking for more general information about your type of service or products. Later in the buying cycle, when they are much closer to making a decision and doing business, they will use more specific keywords, which might include particular brands and models, or even locations to make a purchase. Try to use keywords that cover the entire buying cycle. It may be worth bidding higher for the more specific keywords because your conversion rate for those keywords should be higher.

8. Spy on your competitors. There are a couple of online services, such as SpyFu and KeywordSpy, that allow you to see what keywords your competitors are bidding on in their paid search campaigns. This information can be very useful. But don’t just assume that your competitors are smarter than you are. You will still need to test to see which of their keywords are effective.

And remember that you are looking for groups of keywords. Unless your campaign is very small, it is unlikely you will want to run a 1:1 ratio of keywords to ads. It will be a very unruly number of ads to have to create and monitor. So you will be assigning ads to small groups of related keywords, and writing ad copy that applies to all of the keywords. So if you’re going to run ads for “gardening”, you might as well run them for “flower gardening”, “spring garden”, and “planting”. The major search engines have some nice dynamic features that make it pretty easy to customize an ad for multiple keywords.

Using the above strategies, you should be able to greatly expand the number of keywords in your paid search campaigns, and generate many new keyword ideas for natural search. I recommend that you first use your paid search campaign to generate data related to your keywords, and then optimize your site for those keywords that convert at the highest rate, unless the keywords are too competitive to target with SEO.

Keyword research is a vital part of building a profitable website. It brings traffic and with traffic comes sales and profit. Learn how to do profitable keyword research and you will quickly learn how to make more money online.

What is keyword research?

Keyword research is the process of finding words and phrases you can target in your website. These are generally words or phrases that are related to your topic, that people looking for your site would use to find you.

What is a good keyword?

A good keyword is a word or phrase that people are actually searching for. The second element of a good keyword is that the word itself is not too competitive.

If you rank for keywords with no one searching on them, you still don’t get traffic. If you choose keywords that are so competitive, even if they have a lot of searches, you still won’t get traffic, because you won’t be able to make it to the top of the search engines for people to find you.

Why do I need good keywords?

Doing good keyword research, and finding good kewyords is important because you will get organic (free) traffic from those keywords.

Choosing profitable keywords is important because it assures you will make money with your website. You can certainly pay for traffic, but using good keywords will get your long term, ongoing, free traffic.

How do keywords get me traffic?

When someone is searching for information online they generally go to a search engine. They put a word or phrase in the search engine that will help them find what they are looking for.

When the results come up for their search if your site comes up on the first page chances are they may click on your site. Your chances increase the higher on page 1 you are.

The more keywords with high search volume, or the more long tail keywords that your site shows up for the more traffic you will get.

How do I start the keyword research process?

First step first, think about what your site offers. Your keywords must be relevant to your content. Once you have figured out some main areas of focus for your site you can begin looking for relevant keywords.

How do I find good keywords?

There are many tools available that will help you to find profitable keywords. Whatever tool you choose you want to make sure they provide information about how many people are searching for that term. You also want to be able to find out how much competition your keyword has. Google now offers search volume numbers on the Adwords Tool. You can use it for free. You can also estimate how much money each keyword will make through adsense using the Google Adwords Tool.

Finding profitable keywords should be the cornerstone of any online business. No matter what kind of business you are running you need traffic, you need eyes on your page. Finding the best keywords for your site will get you that traffic. Then you can start working on converting the traffic to sales.

An important part of any online business is doing keyword research and rounding up a list of important keywords to attract surfers to your site (think SEO). Whether it is for your pay-per-click campaigns or for creating content pages for your site, these keyword research tips will help you find targeted keywords.

Step 1 – Brainstorm You should make a list of all the obvious keywords that come to mind. Don’t limit yourself and get all the related terms in on big list. For example, if I was doing a weight loss site, I would start with the obvious ones like;

weight loss diet-losing fat-exercise-healthy eating

Step 2 – Check the competition. With the list I just made, I would try each of them in search engines and notice the top ten sites that come up in the results. I would then check the keyword meta tag in the HTML source code. I would note every keyword and write them on my list. This is an important keyword research tip. Your are taking notice of your competition in order to beat them right?

Step 3 – Keyword list drill down. You now have a list to work with. It is now time to expand your search. Check out http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ and use this tool to see how many searches every day there are for your keywords and note every related keywords that get at least 10 searches a day. You can also use Google keyword research tool. List every misspelled keywords also. Some people use “web site” while others type “website”. Remember that hyphens are treated as space by search engines.

Step 4 – Sizing up the competition. You should have hundreds if not thousands of keywords on your list by now. Make sure you clean up your list for non-related terms. For example, If my weight loss site doesn’t have anything to do with Atkins diet, ditch any keywords that include “Atkins”. Use Google to see how many competing sites you have for your keywords. Just use quotes around your keywords to see how many phrase match you get. Notice how many competing results you get.

Step 5 – Prioritizing Your should now concentrate on using the keywords with less than 15000 competing results. Use those in your articles, content web pages, etc.

Using software for keyword research will save you a lot of time. some have an added feature that list the number of pay-per-click campaigns for those keywords. This is very useful when you want to see how much it will cost you for competing in this area.

Use every keyword that will bring you the most targeted visitors. You will find it is much easier to get on the first page of search engines with keyword phrases that have at least 3 or 4 terms.

After all this work, your keyword research tips will put you ahead in the search engines ranking.

Keyword research in undoubtedly one of the most important aspects to consider when setting up your own online home business.

If you don’t target your keyword phrases effectively then you will be wasting both time and effort, performing tasks that will never pay off no matter how hard you try.

Here are some points to consider when conducting your keyword research:

1. Consider which tools you are going to use and save them to a one of your favourites folders for easy and frequent access. There are even some tools out there that allow you to download a tool bar with all the tools readily available. There are numerous free tools, many of which are very useful. I personally, use a tool called Keyword Elite to conduct my online keyword research.

2. What keyphrases are you going to target? – If you have very few resources available and are new to online marketing then it is advisable that you target ‘long tail’ keyword phrases. These are keyword phrases with 3-5 words, which make them a lot less competitive and easier to attain top rankings in the search engines.

3. Use a variety of keyword phrases for each campaign – Are you using the keywords in your website content or are they primarily for backlinking text? I would find two or three less competitive keyword phrases for each target market and use these to create backlinks through article submissions. Then, take ten different variations of these keyword phrases and use them in your website content.

4. Target profitable keyword phrases – Obviously the main aim of keyword research is to find profitable keywords. How can we do that? One effective way to target buyers and also find less competitive search terms is to find keyword phrases that contain certain words like, ‘buy’ as in ‘buy keyword research tool’.

5. Find untapped markets – Many of your competitors will be targeting all the same keyword phrases. This is where they fall down. Find obscure phrases that your target are already searching for and go after these by specifically writing articles based on these to achieve better or top search engine rankings. One good way to do this is by scanning your current website visitors and finding the keyword terms that sent them to your site.

Keyword research is only a beginning in building a profitable online business but it is an aspect of your marketing that cannot be overlooked. Effective keyword research is essential to ensure your business becomes a huge success and not a dismal failure.

Keyword research is the process of determining which keyword phrases will describe your website’s products and/or services and are actually used in web searches. It is insight into the needs of your customers or clients. Bottom line it is finding out what Internet surfers are actually searching for.

Choosing keywords or keyword phrases can be very confusing for new site owners. If you don’t have keyword or keyword phrases optimized on your web site, you will not get the traffic you want and individuals will not stay on your site, read your information or buy you service or product.

Keyword research can be broken down into a three step process. The first step is the discovery phase. In this step you want to focus on identifying as many keywords or phrases as possible.

Initially you need to sit down and brainstorm a list of keyword/keyword phrases that address the topic of your web site. Have a dictionary and thesaurus handy. At this point include every word or phrase that you can think of.

There are several keyword tools that are available to help you generate a keyword list. Some of these tools are free such as GoodKeyWords and Google Adwords Tool, while others such as WordTracker are fee based. With these tools you will be able to generate hundreds of keyword phrases.

The second step in the analyzing phase. This step involves analyzing the popularity and competition for the keyword phrases. The quickest way to perform the analysis is to use one of the fee based keyword tools like Wordtracker.

Wordtracker is able to quickly take your list of keyword phases and give you the number of searches in the past 30 days and the number of competitive web sites for each phrase. Wordtracker also supplies a numerical value called a Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) that helps determine the competitiveness of a keyword phrase. A keyword phrase with a high KEI means it is less competitive.

From Wordtracker you are able to export your keyword list along with the KEI, search and competitive site data. This information can then be entered into Excel spreadsheets. This will allow you to make comparisons between various keyword phrases and do away with any unrelated or undesirable keyword phrases.

The third step is the selection of keyword phrases. From your analysis phase, you should be able to identify a number of high quality keyword phases that can accurately describe the qualities of your website.

In your final selection of keyword phases you need to look for phrase that have a high level of search activity, while the level of competitiveness is relatively low. For making your final selection of 15-20 keyword phrases you will want to do a Google search on the keyword phrases and view the top web sites listed for each phrase. Are the sites professionally designed? Can you design a web page that can move up into the top ratings for this keyword phrase?

When starting a new web site it’s highly recommended to target only one unique keyword phrase per page. With your newly researched keyword list you can write your content with a balanced use of unique phrases that will help generate traffic to your web pages.

<script type=”text/javascript”>var infolink_pid = 26074;</script> <script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://resources.infolinks.com/js/infolinks_main.js”></script>

Trying to compete in the arena of internet marketing without a good keyword research tool (not to mention a free keyword tool) is like going to slay the dragon with your everyday kitchen steak knife. Your tool is too small and you are about to get yourself hurt. Big time. Think about it like this….the army with the most guns will usually win the war. With a free keyword tool you have a single gun, and a small one at that. But what a solid paid keywords research tool will give you is an arsenal of firepower that can be wielded so many ways that most campaigns become virtually indefensible by the competition. It’s the difference between guns and bows and arrows. There is just no way to win if you are using inferior weapons.

A good keywords research tool will provide you intelligence on the competition that the free tools will never deliver. How much content has your competitor published? Where is the strongest competition on the internet for your campaign? What exactly has your competitor published and how are going to beat them? Try answering all those questions with the free tool Google provides you. You will not stand a chance and neither will your campaigns. You should have tool that gives you all this information with the click of a single button in half the amount of time it would take to track it down manually, even if you already know how to do that which is doubtful. I don’t know about you, but I need as much time as I can get. I heard they weren’t making any more of it.

Owning a good keyword research tool is being serious about internet marketing. If you are just playing and dipping your toe in the water to check the temperature, OK. But you will never make any money that way, at least no more than a dinner and movie might cost you. But if you are looking to make a living, you will never compete with the marketers who are already experiencing success in their niches. They have already learned their lesson. Free ain’t really free. There is a price to pay for being cheap and skimping on your keyword research. That price is losing profitable spots on the front page of Google by the people who own a $100 tool and are beating your pants offs at will. Information is king and his sword is a good keywords research tool.

Keywords research tools come in many forms and you can pull your hair out trying to figure out which one is for you. At some point in your search you will have to trust someone and decide to buy one. Until you do, you are no more tan a hobbyist. However, I doubt that is why you are reading this article and if you are still reading at this point, maybe you already know it is time to get serious or get to finding you a new hobby.

For the past 4 months, it has been fluctuating between 450 to 650 which is fine.

Now, for the past 1 week or so, I find that there are "zero" searches being shown in the 24-hr count. On the contrary, my own website is recording more than 100 hits per day through Google organic search itself.

Keyword research is crucial to the success of your website’s optimisation campaign. Choosing the right website keywords can produce a lof of traffic and get your website ranked high in search engine listings while choosing the wrong website keywords will leave your website on page 100 or worse, with barely any visitors at all.

Many website owners think they know which website keywords are best suited for their search engine optimisation strategy. But unless you know exactly who your target market is and what terms they use to find businesses like yours, chances are you need to undertake some serious keyword research to find the most effective search terms. Keyword research will give you an idea of what keywords your potential customers are searching for, how much competition there is for any given term, and which website keywords are the most popular.

It is important for you to know what search terms your potential customers are looking for. The keywords your customers are likely use when searching for your product may not be the ones you would think, especially if your business is one that has a lot of industry jargon. You may be tempted to use website keywords that don’t relate to your business just to bring in traffic, but this technique will always backfire, because the traffic it does generate is not interested in your website.

Keyword research will also give you an idea of how great the competition is for any given keyword or keyword phrase. It is important to know how many other websites use the same keywords and how many people are searching for them. The most effective website keywords for your optimisation strategy are the ones that are searched for the most with the least amount of competition. Weigh each keyword’s popularity with the amount of other websites already using it. You should always include the most popular ones but concentrate on getting ranked for the website keywords that have less competition.

Investing time in keyword research for your website will help you to increase traffic and get ranked higher by search engines. There are many tools available to help you find the right keywords. Google and Overture have some of the most popular website keyword research tools and there are many others that are free as well as paid keyword research programs such as Wordtracker.

Keyword Density
It is usually suggested to find 1 – 3 keywords for your content, but extensive research is required to find out which keyword is most searched for, after all its no point of optimizing your website for the keywords that no-one is searching for. So make sure you do your paperwork and jot down which keywords are most searched for and with less competition. Write as many keywords you think of, don’t just limit them. You should be able to build up several phrases from them. While thinking of any keyword search think about following

List down the purpose of your website. You will definitely find some words here.

What would you type in the search engine if you want to find out your website?

You can use Overture for your keyword research. This tool not only shows you how many searches have been made for a given keyword in past month but all shows you several alternatives for that keyword. The other keyword research tool I can suggest of is WORDTRACKER. Although they require subscription, but OVERTURE is completely free. Search engines like Google also provides with good recommendation tool although it does not indicate any popularity.

Measuring Competition for Keywords
After you are done with your <b<keyword research for seo and short listed all phrases it’s now time to find out the competition involved with them. The best way to analyze competition is go to any search engine and type your keyword. This will show you number of results return.

In order to make this task easier use paper-based or excel worksheet as done below:

Keyword Term: keyword research article
Date of Search: __________
Top ranked site: _____________
Search result: 46,900,000
No of searches made in OVERTURE: X numbers

Likewise repeat the same procedure for your other phrases. This will help you to do various comparisons between several key terms and select the best niche keyword.

Applying Keywords to your content
Make sure to keep 3-4% of keyword density. Use your keywords as following in the body of your webpage content:

Title Tag: Title tag content is displayed on your browser’s title. You can use about 70 – 80 characters here. Make sure to use good combination of you keywords here separated by ‘|’. For example for our “keyword research articles” keyword we can use Keyword Research Articles | Keyword Analysis | Keyword Optimization.

Meta Description Tag: Write meta tag description of about 200-250 words include you most relevant keywords.

Header Tags: Always use your main keyword in h1 tag and combination of your keywords in h2 tag. h1 can be used as headings and h2 can be used as sub-headings.

Body Tag: This is where you spread you keywords. Make sure you have at least 300 words in your body content where you use you keywords in the first 25 and last 25 words of the body tag.

Img Alt Tag: If you are using images always provide alt attribute which shows your keywords.

Anchor Tag: Text appearing for any link is called anchor tag. This has high relevance in any search engine.

Webpage name: Having keyword name as part of you webpage name is also very important.

When you take a look at the way that search engines are constructed and if you are interested in the relevant traffic that search engines can bring you, will soon be aware of the need for effective keyword research. When you work with keywords, you will soon realize that a good balance must be struck. If your keywords are too general, you will receive a great deal of traffic that is only peripherally interested in your product. On the other hand, if your keywords are too specific, there is a good chance that the keywords in question will not be searched for. When you take all of this into account, a specialist who has some experience with search engine optimization might be your best opportunity to make sure that you have effective keyword research done.

For instance, if you have signed up with a program like Google Adwords, a certain amount of effective keyword research will be necessary. The Google Adwords program is very simple, but it does take a certain amount of work to use efficiently. At its most basic level, Google Adwords will allow you to select a series of keywords. When those keywords are searched on Google, your link will show up on the sidebar to the right of the natural search results. When you are working on getting the right keyword combinations to bring the right people to your site, effective keyword research is essential.

Effective keyword research can take a great deal of time for people who are unused to it and are just beginning to feel their way around search engines. When you take part in Google Adwords, you are expected to experiment with the keywords a bit. Due to the highly changeable nature of the internet, one of the best advantages that you will have when working with Google Adwords is how quickly you can change it. You can change the keywords that you want, to relate your link until you get the right combination to bring the right people to your site.

It is also worth noting, however, that effective keyword research takes time that you might not necessarily have. To really make search engine optimization works for you, need to have a certain amount of experience on the way the field works and a good understanding of your audience. More than that, you need to understand an audience that may not recognize you yet. It is an interesting balance between using keywords that are both industry-specific and general enough that you will pull in the right people. A specialist can help you find the right keywords without sacrificing more time than absolutely necessary.

Whether you are new to the world of exciting search engine optimization or you simply feel like you could be getting more hits, remember that effective keyword research can be instrumental. Get a keyword specialist involved and you won’t have to do it alone; effective keyword research and experience can be yours with just a little bit of investigation.
